Door Makeover

You know how sometimes you get on a roll and you end up starting more projects than necessary? We're guilty of that.

Our front door was incredibly inefficient. It was a gorgeous wood door with fun detail but it had warped over the years and had cracks. Our entry way was a frigid cold draft every winter. So, while the rest of the house was a mess, we decided it was as good a time as any to knock out the front entry.

Old:

New:

It's not quite 100% finished yet. He's coming back Wednesday to (hopefully) finish. This is taking longer than anticipated for the following reasons:
1. The [insert your own description here] people who worked on the door/stairs last did not put ANY structure under the doorway. It was a giant hole full of expanding foam.
2. Because there was no suportive structure beneath the door, the framing couldn't hold the windows and some of them slid through the floor, leaving a lovely half inch gap at the top of the window which was a hole to the outside world.

The door guy has been amazing and he has taken the time to do a top notch job. Our front room is much warmer now!

Identity crisis

The sink is installed and boxes are all unpacked.

We got some creative space solutions, like this roll out shelf below the sink.

And believe it or not we went having things stacked on top of the cabinets in our old kitchen to having empty, spare cabinets! Insanity.

And with the real kitchen now in use my bathroom (used as base camp the past 2 months) is having an identity crisis. It's lovingly now referenced as "bathroom-kitchen".

Santa came early

And he brought countertops. We got a gun metal grey quartz and the color is perfect! One major step closer to having a normal house again.

They forgot the windowsill but promised to be back tomorrow.

Also note that Mark & Jim got all the trim assembled on top of the cabinets.

We also purchased and assembled our kitchen table which is extendable to accomdate almost any situation. It's buried right now but here's a link to ... You guessed it: the ikea page.

Stay tuned. We really do have more coming.

We have an appointment!

Counter tops are scheduled to be installed this Monday (Dec 14) in the afternoon! Wahoo!! Everyone cross your fingers that it actually will happen. Because if it does, there is a 75% that I will still decorate for Christmas this year.

In the meantime, I promise to snap some photos tonight of the minor details we've been working on.

Cheers,
Lisa

Don't Give Up On Us!

So, not a whole lot has happened since last post. The house is still a disaster. The cabinets are still countertop-less. But we have high hopes to hear back from the counter top place this week. We'll let everyone know the installation date as soon as feasibly possible.

In the meantime, Corey did some electrical work for us. We now have grounded outlets in the kitchen (yay for safety codes!) and he installed a new light over the sink for us.

Guess where we bought the light....

If you did not guess IKEA, you clearly don't know my kitchen. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20088681

Cheers. I hope everyone enjoyed their turkey day thoroughly.

Sort of weekly update

All the cabinet doors are hung, handles are installed, and some wall repairs have been made. Mark has been simply amazing: he cones from work every night & works on the kitchen. Here are the obligatory pictures. Please note the amazing pantry which pulls out and all the shelves are rolling shelves.

Yes. That's real food. We get to put stuff in the wall cabinets but we're not going to bother unpacking the base cabinets until we get countertops. Which unfortunately will not happen before Thanksgiving. But at least the stove is back in!!

Til next time.

Weekly Update

I know. I've become a blog slacker. But in my defense, the details take a long time to finish.

First note of importance: Janice survived the swine flu. And she came to visit, as you can tell from my now sterile living room.

We've nicknamed her "the white tornado". Also notice the fireplace has now been painted and us patiently awaiting its mantel.

Second announcement: all of the cabinet frames are in!

(you may not recognize this part of the kitchen...it's where the wall used to separate the kitchen from the dining room.)

Yay! 2 out of 4 appliances ain't bad...right?

Countertops will be ordered this Friday, but it will still take about 2 weeks from then to get them installed. Kind of a bummer.

Wednesday night Mark & I have a date to pick out a sink and faucet. Other than that, we have lots of doors to hang and drawers to assemble this week.

Big shout out to Jim & Janice for all of their help!!

Getting Closer

No, we didn't run away & abandon the mess in our house. We did, however take a short break.

Monday was Mark's birthday and he worked both jobs. I also went back to work that day and finally found time to do my stats homework. Tuesday was school day for me which left little time for kitchen work.

Throughout the rest of the week we spent every night either mudding, sanding, priming, or painting. Finally, today, we did something picture worthy...

That's right. The cabinets are finally getting hung! The wall cabinets will be done tonight and hopefully the base ones tomorrow. We still need to attach the moulding and trim once everything is hung. I'll post more throughout the week.

Cheers,

Cabinets. Sort Of.

We finished taping the drywall in the kitchen, dining room, & the fireplace this morning. Next we primed & painted the backsplash and started assembling the cabinets.

Chase, Hailey, & Steve helped assemble the cabinet frames.

Mother F decided to clean my filthy house. It literally looks like Mt St Helens erupted nearby; there's a layer of dirt from all the chiseling earlier in the week.

Mom was incredibly helpful by cleaning my room and doing my laundry. Niether of us can remember the last time she had to clean up after me. Seriously, I am tidy person & she never had to clean up my stuff. So, I felt quite odd that my mother was cleaning my room for me. But it looks fantastic and she was a huge help!

Wall Down

It's a royal mess right now. The dining room wall has been cut and patched.

The plumbing for the sink has been rerouted.

And now it's clean up time!

Fireplace

There are a lot of things I wish I was alive to see in the 70s. The decision to build this fireplace is not one of those.

I mean, c'mon, throw down a bear skin rug and film a porno while you're at it.

The one thing I've wanted updated since we moved in was this fireplace. Having just removed brick by brick and stone by stone from my parents' fireplaces in Bear Lake this summer, tearing this baby down was not the number one option. So, I decided to cover it up.

We built a facade around the existing fireplace, framing it out and then sheetrocking, to make it look a little more modern and seamless with the living room. This isn't much to look at, but as of tonight, this is what the fireplace has transformed to:

Eventually, once I get it mudded and taped, we will prime it, paint it, put the baseboard on it, and I will add a mantel comprised of pieces of moulding from Lowe's or Home Depot. The end result should look somewhat like this fireplace (minus the neon blue paint!) over on ThisOldHouse.com.

Secretly, I might be more excited for the fireplace than I am the kitchen. Yeah, I just admitted that.

Cabinet Party on Saturday!

This is a public service announcement: Saturday is a cabinet party at our place! Remember these?

Well it's time to introduce them to their new home! And as sexy as the tile looks all by itself, this room would be a lot more functional if it had cabinets to go with it.

RSVP to Mark or Lisa so we can be sure to have enough beverages for everyone! Fun begins at 8am but you can come over whenever convenient.

Quick recap on progress: tile is all down, grout tomorrow evening. Tonight we are going to frame the fireplace & get the Sheetrock up on it.

Tile: stage 2

Gonna finish the full squares tonight, make cuts tomorrow, then grout on Friday!

A big thanks to Papa Ferrara! He's been a real life saver!

Time for bed now!

Tile: stage 1

Here's a lonesome beverage amidst the sea of orange underlaying.

Here's the tile palace, aka our deck transformed.

Dad won't let me take a picture right now of him. But it will happen. Don't worry.

A Blank Slate

Today we start on rebuilding the kitchen. Early this morning Mark and his HeMan strength finished ripping out the floor. Hailey helped me repair the Sheetrock where the back splash had been. We are all exhausted but still excited to see it all finished.

Today Papa Ferrara is headed down to help me lay the cementboard and tile. We will see how far we get...

For now, enjoy my makeshift kitchen until my real one gets put back together:

The Floor, Almost Gone

I promise I'll write more tomorrow morning but for now, sleep on this.

This picture doesn't need words

It's Raining Men!

Well, just in my kitchen at least. Saturday and Sunday we removed all of the cabinets with the help of Kevin, Corey, Janice, & Jim.

Now, what remodel job would be complete without a few surprises?

Exhibit A:

The laminate back splash had been glued directly onto the sheet rock. Yeah...I've got some major repair work to do on the walls before I can paint.

Exhibit B:

Tile was laid directly onto the existing linoleum floor. No backer board beneath. Now, probably the lamest part of this whole situation (besides having to also scrape up linoleum) is that the wood floor on either side of the kitchen entrances will now be about a 1/4 inch lower than the tile when we finish. Why? Because the wood floor was laid directly onto the subfloor as well. Grumble.

Today's goals: chisel out the floor and repair the sheet rock.

Kitchen In a Box

On Friday I woke up with a terrible cold. I didn't get out of bed the entire day. Mark awoke on Saturday to find that I had quickly spread my germs his way. Needless to say, by the time Saturday rolled around, we were already behind with the demolition schedule. We had not started a thing.

But Ma & Pa Robinson are always there to help us find our sanity and retain it. Jim & Janice took us to the Home Show to get some ideas for home improvements on Saturday in our zombie state. After a quick tour of the show, a quick bite to eat, and a stop at Lowe's, Jim & Janice brought over about a hundred of those big plastic totes (thanks Sco & Amy for letting us borrow them!) and helped us pack away our kitchen in just a few minutes.

It's kind of funny that our entire kitchen is now stored in boxes.

And with everything out of the way, the real fun began. More in the next post...

School Is Cool, Kids

You may have heard about this on the news but I am proud to say that I heard about it from my very own employer: Pearson.

Today was the Read for the Record event organized by Jumpstart, an early childhood literacy program. This event is a huge effort to raise awareness about the importance of literacy and reading activities for young children. This event has been an annual world record setter--and breaker--since 2006. I am happy to report that I have been participating in this event, sponsored by Pearson Foundation, since its inception.

Today I read the beloved Very Hungry Caterpillar to 140 kindergartners and first graders at Roosevelt Elementary. For those of who are legitmately concerned about how this was accomplished by someone deathly afraid of children, I was supervised by none other than Ms. Kenna Robinson. And we all survived. Thanks to everyone who participated today!

Ladies & Gentlemen, Start Your Engines

As most of you know, we purchased a house exactly 3 years ago. Those of you who have seen this house probably noticed that it is rather classy, except for the neglected 1970s kitchen. Now, I have to give our previous homeowners props for attempting to update it...they replaced whatever wondrous flooring may have come with the home with some cheap pink tile. Then they had the brilliant idea to paint the inner kitchen wall blood red. Or, when blood red is paired with pink tile, the resulting color is hot pink. So...yeah. They tried. Oh, did I mention the cheap, laminate counter tops are pink as well? Like baby pink. And it's peeling.

The kitchen layout is open, spacious, and other than that, kind of unusable. It is enclosed from the living room and dining room so at parties everyone is segregated; the cabinets are custom plywood with no adjustable shelving so we've resorted to putting odd-shaped, modern cooking ware on top of the cabinets; and it came with the original doorknobs which are engraved with buffalo. These are rather endearing items and we are brainstorming a way to keep them active in our post-remodel decor.

And here are some pictures to give you visuals for the story.

Now most of you know that we have resolved to fix this once and for all. So, without further ado, I give you the first day of Kitchen Re-Creation.

We had deliberated for about 1 1/2 years on what to do with the cabinets. Long story short: we decided to get new ones. As Mark kindly put it 'painting the damn things won't fix the fact that they're completely non-functional'. Well put, good sir. After briefly pricing the crap at Lowe's and Home Depot, we decided to order cabinets through IKEA. Which is where our story really begins.

Sunday, October 4, 2009: We climbed the IKEA escalator to the showroom labyrinth, a 20x20 slab of porcelain tile to match with a veneer color as our only weapon of reason. Lucky for us, we hit the 10% off cabinets sale. Good. The savings will pay for a real kitchen table after the remodel.

Finding solace in the tile choice and changing our cabinet colors back to our original color from 3 months ago, we placed the order. Then the stress hit. It wasn't the credit card receipt (REI dividend, baby!!!) that did us in but the fact that we don't own a truck and we were going to have carloads of cabinet pieces in an hour.

After sitting in the furniture pick-up lobby raking our brains of who could come help us drive a carload of majestically flat boxes back to our place, Mark had an epiphany: He works as a delivery truck driver. He has keys and access to a box truck. Brilliant. A little late, but brilliant.

An hour later, we made it back to IKEA, and after procedural mayhem, the truck was loaded.

Well now, this is just too convenient having a box truck around on a weekend. So we headed over to Home Depot and picked up sheet rock and lumber for the fireplace (which deserves a few posts of its own so just hang on to your panties, folks).

In summary: Beer truck saved the day. And this weekend, if anyone wants an upper body workout, come on over. We have cabinets to tear out and install.
